Crashing Not Burning

Well, my computer has crashed 3 times this week. I've been able to reinstall Windows each time, but who knows how long the hard drive will keep it up. So, in case I don't make any more posts, I'd like to wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year. I'd like to thank the few who left comments and maybe next year I'll do this again.

Word came down today that evangelist Oral Roberts has passed away. Two years ago, on December 7, I shared an EP called Oral Roberts' Christmas Favorites. The EP featured Paul Mickelson on the pipe organ performing four standards of the season. Sometimes it pays to dig through stuff that others have gone through and given up. Earlier in the year I was at my favorite second-hand book and record dealer and noticed a stack of 78s and 45s by the curb. What the heck, I thought. I shuffled over and started going through the pile when, lo and behold, my eyes fell upon the item pictured above. My only disappointment being that it wasn't the picture sleeve. But it was is beautiful condition. So that story out of the way, here's drummer Sam Ulano and his version of "Santa And The Doodle-li-boop" backed with "The Story Of Santa Claus."

Most of us who love Christmas music love the Ultra-Lounge Christmas Cocktails series. This year I found the LP that gave us some of the choicest cuts from that series. Most of the tracks have made it to CD, but here's a couple of tracks not included featuring the late Les Paul and his vocalizing wife, Mary Paul. Rest in peace, Les. Don't Take Your Vinyl To Town, Son

Imagine a mid-life crisis and the thought of selling all your household possessions and getting in your car and taking off for parts unknown. Back in 1991, that's exactly what Mrs. Clause and I did. All the vinyl I'd collected since 1964 went with the wind. Since that time, we settled back down and began our accumulation all over again. Sadly, I can no longer live the life of a crate-digger with my arthritis and other medical difficulties. End of story.
The tracks on this compilation are from mix tapes I made during the eighties and 1990 before the big purge. I've replaced some of them and still search for others. If anyone out there knows where I can get a copy of the Christmas album that the New Orleans Coca-Cola Bottling Company put out in the early eighties, please let me know. I bought one from Record Ron down in the Big Easy a couple of decades ago and would love to replace it.

Sprauncy is a term I discovered in the description of a track on one of those KPM Music Library lps and I thought it fit the mood of this collection, even if I don't know what it means. Since the governments of the United States and Great Britain have called on Santa Clause to shape up and set a better example for children, I'm sharing a single by Giselle MacKenzie called "Too Fat For The Chimney" as well as the b-side - "Jingle Bells."

Here are two singles from the Vietnam War era which Eddie Riff recently shared on his blog. Here's what he had to say:

"The first is "The Christmas Letter" by Little Teresa Ann in which our heroine writes to Santa to explain how, at age six, she would do without any toys if only her Daddy could be by her side instead of in Vietnam. The second single is "Daddy Won't Be Home For Christmas" by Two & A Half. Here, Mommy reads Daddy's letter explaing why Daddy is away in a foreign land and why he and others must fight and die.

Sing A Song For Christmas

Several years ago I purchased part of a library of records which had belonged to a defunct radio station. There were lots of lps of public service announcements, ads, generic spots, etc. This is one which ended up in my Christmas collection. I've always liked Jack Jones' version of "Mistletoe And Holly" which serves as the theme for this Program produced by the U. S. Air Force during the sixties. The cover I've always found poignant, what with U. S. airmen and Santa trying to bring cheer to Vietnamese children while we...well, I won't get into that. Merry Christmas to all and when was that peace on earth going to begin?

Santa has used lots of modes of transportation other than his sleigh if you believe all the songs. Here's at least the second about a helicopter. Gene Autry recorded "Santa' Coming In A Whirleybird" and in 1976 Clinton Caldwell gave us "Santa's Copter." This single was released on the Omni Label. Listen for the line about greasy elves! Sanity's Sharity For Friday

Here are a couple of records I purchased recently which I thought people might enjoy.
One is by a Kansas City, MO group called "The Classmen." The songs are "Elvin The Little Black Elf" and "Christmas Eve By The Golden Gate." This group seems to have released at least a half-dozen singles in the KC area during the 1960's.
The other record is by Sonny Bloch's Coralairs from South Florida. "Buon Natale" was later covered by Nat "King" Cole and is fairly well known. The flip side is "Louis The Elf" and fun for the kiddies.
I'll try to post the labels later.
